One of the best books of poetry I've ever read. Worth every penny. Sheffield uses astounding imagery that touches the soul, and could not be happier with my purchase!
I have not studied poetry as much as I should like, but I know good writing when I see it. Sheffield's project is daring and unique a collection of poems from different perspectives and voices woven together into a single compelling whole. The writing, if sometimes uneven, is dynamic, compelling, and occasionally inspired. Come expecting the dark and the horrible, but also beauty in the ordinary and the unexpected. Highly recommended for those looking to read something new and completely unique.

I've made it a pretty unbreakably hard and fast rule to never read (and certainly not enter a Goodreads Giveaway for) self-published poetry. Hell, I'm even leery of going anywhere near published poetry in this day and age, in which heart-and-flower-decorated Tumblr memes pass as legitimate free verse. I guess that makes me a poetry snob, but I'm okay with that.
I'm not entirely sure why I broke my own stricture and entered the Giveaway to win Find Learn Become A Poem by Tommy Sheffield. The fact that I'm a huge fan of ergodic literature and that Tommy plays with form and structure here would have been a very good reason for me to break down and give into my curiosity, but the book description didn't actually give away that much information. What it did say however, was that it was about "the death of the American dream" – perhaps I interpreted that to mean it related to the current American political situation? Or maybe I just thought I wouldn't actually win. Who knows? It was the middle of the night. But what a fortuitous and happy mistake!
And I can safely use the word happy here, because despite the definite tenor of horror and bleakness that the narrative begins with, the resolution and ultimate message of the poem is not just about the death of dreams (and I must confess, I am not entirely clear what makes the "dream" of Chris, the poem's main character, specifically American, as the book definition purports it to be), but about their death and subsequent rebirth – the "Become"ing of the title.
(At 60-some-odd pages, you might fear the length of this volume of a single poem, but there is a lot of white space as well as an engaging pace of thematic development, so don't be daunted!)
The beginning pages find the aforementioned Chris recovering from a horrific fire, in which he lost much, much more than his normal, pre-disfigurement looks. His voice here is not only despairing and suicidal, but confused, disjointed, scattered. Sheffield brilliantly structures his poem – not only with words but with form – to reflect the angry and flailing state of Chris' psyche. He continues playing with the mechanics of language and layout as Chris evolves through the stages of grief – including rage and near catatonia – and ultimately into recovery, and as Chris settles into the post-trauma person he will finally become, likewise Sheffield's verse evolves to reflect more ordered, sophisticated thoughts and contemplations.
I may fancy myself a poetry "snob", but that's only because I'm picky, not because I actually know much about poetry or its academic specifics. That being said, I do at least recognize the concrete and epic forms in Find Learn Become, as well as ones I am sure have names that I don't know, and ones of Sheffield's own devising. And what I do know I like is how he uses not just words, but punctuation, font changes – and what's more, placement and formation within the page itself – but only meaningfully and with purpose, so that the manipulations contribute to the mood and narrative instead of just screaming, "Look at me – I'm e.e. freakin' cummings!" Short enough to consume in one sitting (which I recommend, so as to stay connected to the hero's emotional rollercoaster), the poem still provides a complete narrative arc, and satisfies the poetry-lover's expectation of smart language, fitting metaphor, and intelligent literary allusion.
The kicker is that author Tommy Sheffield wrote all this as an undergraduate in his early 20s. I am blown away that someone so young can have not only this level of facility with the poetic arts, but the life experience to so convincingly portray the psychological backlash of such devastating events. I will be following his career and future writing with interest!

The author - Tommy Sheffield - has invented a new type of poetry. His poetry has a bi-polar, janus aspect that conveys the everyday struggle of good and evil. Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster - be prepared to feel the rage of the author - and the sorrow of a world whose promise of a happy life turns out to not be a promise but merely a constant pursuit of fleeting happiness. In a culture raked with superheros and dystopias - this is a refreshing reality check.
